Rigid heddle looms: warping and weaving oh my! with Crystal Lawrence

Do you have a rigid heddle loom that’s been sitting around your house just waiting to be warped up, but you’re just unsure about the whole process Or perhaps you know how your loom works but want a better grasp of weaving parlance and the mathematical equations involved. Whichever the case, this class will provide an excellent foundation for all future weaving projects.
Bring your rigid heddle loom and we will get it warped up lickety split and have you well on your way to enjoying your loom more fully. We will go over all the parts of a loom, the verbiage involved and I promise to provide you a worksheet that makes the math simple, plus a few tricks to help you figure out setts and yardage needed on the fly.

Note: this class will get you warped and weaving but the project may require finishing after class.
Materials: rigid heddle loom (including all accessories that came with the loom)
Yarn for a project: feel free to contact the instructor before hand if you have questions involving how much to bring and what weight of yarn for which reed size you own. Typically 4 oz of yarn is enough for a scarf. Yarn should be either on cones or wound in a ball before class.
Calculator, tapestry needle, pen/ pencil, scissors, tape measure

Introduction to Weaving Theory 101 with Crystal Lawrence

Remember in school when you had ‘lab’ class?  Sitting down at the loom is the lab part of weaving, but as we all know – the most important part is knowing what you’re doing before you actually try it.  This class will give you the basic know-how to plan any weaving project out.   We will go over how to calculate a project using examples and the example you have brought in, the weaving vernacular, loom  anatomy, cloth structure of both tabby (plain) and twill, ‘good’ weaving yarns, and an on-the-fly way to figure out how much of that gorgeous yarn to get before you walk out of the yarn shop.

Bring – notebook and pencil/pen, calculator/phone, 1 warp & weft yarn you want to make a project with, please know the yardage and weight of the yarn before class if possible.  If not, I will have a McMorran balance and scale to help with that.

Date:1-13
Time:3:30-5:00
Class: $22.50
Materials: $6.00
Total: $28.50

Warping and Weaving on Your Multiple Shaft Loom – Back to Front   with Crystal Lawrence

So you already know a little something about weaving and want to become more proficient at warping from the back to front.  In this class we’ll go over a process-oriented method of warping that will have you much happier with the warp on your dressed loom – and the final woven product.  We will begin with the yarn and project you have prepared for the class, go through the winding, beaming on, threading, sleying, and tying on of your warp.  We will go over how to get a good shed, various fringes and hemming, how to properly throw a shuttle, how to fix a broken warp thread and a couple of methods of beginning and ending the weft thread.  Plan on getting started on your weaving project, but possibly completing it at home.

Prerequisite:  Must either have basic knowledge of weaving, all terms etc and know your loom, or take the Introduction to Weaving Theory 101 class offered on Friday 3.30-5.  I will expect all class attendees to know basic weaving verbiage as I will only be giving a cursory overview. To bring:  Your PORTABLE loom, reed and multiple lease sticks, extra string -2 colors, shuttle(s) and bobbins/pirns, threading and reed hooks, a tapestry needle, a tape measure, 2 colors of traight pins, scissors, notebook and pen, a raddle, warping board, and bobbin winder  if you have one of these.  Most importantly – a project already planned no more than 150 ends and 4 yards or less in length, yarn bought and ready to weave with (in balls or cones, not skeins – all yarn must be plied). If you have any questions about the suitability of your loom, yarns or other accoutrements then please email me at scarlettdelux@gmail.com.Class size:  6 .  Note:  If possible get Peggy Osterkamp’s  Weaving for Beginners and flip through it beforehand.

Khadi 101: Weaving with Handspun with Eileen Hallman
Duration: 2 days
Materials fee: $15.00 includes notebook, fiber, and yarn samples.
Level: Intermediate Weaving, experienced spinning
This class is for intermediate weavers. Experienced spinners will learn to spin technical yarns.

This class is an intensive study using singles yarns as weft. Participants will spin their own weft yarns in various weights and twist levels.
We will explore the relationships between yarn sizes in warp and weft and the effects on sett and energy in singles weft. Weave structure and yarn properties will also be studied.

8-shaft looms are preferred.

Learning Objectives
1. Understand the relationship between twist and energy
2. Understand the dynamics of yarn size, yarn energy, sett, and beat
3. Understand how to maximize yarn properties with weave structure
4. Learn to design fabrics that exploit or mask yarn energy
Materials List
4 or 8 shaft loom warped per instructions; bring extra warp yarn
Spinning wheel
Pen or pencil & paper for note-taking
Weaving accessories applicable to spinning wheel & loom; shuttles, bobbins, bobbin winders, etc.
Instructor will bring Notebook
Commercial weft yarns
Fiber to spin
Extra charkhas
Extra shuttles for charkha spindle
All looms: 18/2 or 20/2 yarn. Any cotton or Tencel, any color.

Put on 7 yards; I’d rather have too much than too little.

Weave a header and 4” plain weave with the same yarn as the warp yarn.

We will weave a variety of twills with various wefts; floor looms will change tie-up several times.

4 shaft looms: Straight draw

Loom 1 40 epi for 4 inches, 32 epi for 4 inches, 24 epi for 4 inches

(8 dent reed at 5/dent, 4/dent, 3/dent)

Total 12” width, 384 threads.

Alpaca Shawl on a Triangle Loom with Angie Buchanan

This beginning weaving class uses a 3 foot Triangle Loom and a continuous weave method, so weaving is made easy as you warp and weave simultaneously. There’s no wasted yarn and it’s a great way to get rid of your odds-and-ends of yarn. You’ll also learn how to make color changes and correct mistakes while creating your very own luxurious alpaca shawl. We will discuss types of yarn to use, how to get texture, and how to use the same method on a larger loom. Be ready for lots of fun and be prepared to get bitten by the weaving bug! All skill levels welcome. Students should bring scissors and a crochet hook (for binding off and adding fringe)
