Flax Plant to Linen Yarn with Cassie Dickson

Learn 18th century methods of processing the flax plant to linen yarn by using the actual tools; flax brake, scutching knife, and hackles.  Growing and retting the plant, dressing a distaff and spinning the fiber will be covered.  Intermediate spinning skills are required.

Needed Supplies:

Spinning: The Draws with Nancie McCraw

Take your spinning to the next step and try a different draw.  We are going to explore different styles of drafting and draws for spinning and discuss how to match thedrafting method to the fiber preparation and the yarn you want.  We cover the Short draws, short forward and short backward, spinning from the fold, and a few different long draw methods, pre-drafting and double drafting.  If time permits we will look at manipulating colors with our drafting techniques.

Corespinning Art Yarns with Melissa Yoder Ricks

Corespinning is the foundational technique for many styles of art yarns as well as a great way to spin luxury fibers and textured batts in order to maximize their impact.  Students will first learn the basics of corespinning a balanced yarn from a blended batt, the move on to corespinning with locks, and adding embellishments such as flowers and beads to your corespun yarns, and creating fluffy translucent corespun yarns.

Spin Control: Stripes, Ombre & Other Effects with Hand Dyed Fibers with Melissa Yoder Ricks

Evaluating hand dyed fibers to determine the best way to spin them to preserve the lovely colors that made them appealing. Spinning to create long sections of color in singles, navaho plying, and fractal spinning to create predictable ombre yarn will be covered in this hands-on class.

These techniques come to life when you ply, but how the singles are spun is key. This class will cover how to spin thick and thin singles and novel ways to ply them to create tight stable coils, stacks and halos that won’t move around in your yarn. Tricks for using these yarns in your knitted projects will also be discussed.

Spinning on a Charka with Eileen Hallman

Learn to spin cotton the easy way! (Anything is easy with the right tools; the charkha was designed specifically for spinning cotton.) Learn how to tune and maintain the charkha. We will also cover cotton types, preparations, and properties.

Drop Spindles are the gateway to fiber addiction.  They are inexpensive, portable and simple to operate.  One you have mastered the spindle you will have learned the steps needed for spinning on the spinning wheel: drafting out fibers, twisting the fiber into yarn, plying, winding up and storing the spun yarn.

Getting the yarn you want from the fleece you have with Robyn Josephs

Now that you can spin a continuous thread, come discover how to spin woolen and worsted yarns and everything in between. Putting your wheel’s tension and pulleys to work for you, learn diameter control from frog hair to bulky. Bring a wheel in good working order. Scotch tension is best for diameter control and we will work with what you bring.  Bring 2oz of roving and 2oz of top.  Fiber will be available from Friends and Fiberworks if you need to purchase roving.

Raging Combs with Susan McFarland

Sharpen your fiber prep techniques. This class will help you work with many brands of combs hand held and 5 pitch. Take many varieties of fibers from  Alpaca, wool long and short to merino and rabbit. See what works best for  your fiber addition. See how the combs clean and straighten the fibers to make  spinning easy. Bring combs if you  have them. If not use ours. Bring fibers you wish to see work with combs or use ours. Students must bring your wheel.

Creative Carding & Fiber Prep with Melissa Yoder Ricks


Many creative yarns begin with creatively prepared fiber! In this hands-on class we will explore different ways to use a drum carder to create blended batts both wild and tame, as well as ways to use of a wool picker to prepare fiber for spinning, and a blending hackle to create blended roving from prepared fiber. Students will take home batts, ‘cloud’ and roving which they create in the class.

Students need to bring tools/supplies STUDENTS WHO OWN DRUM CARDERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING THEM. A spinning wheel or spindle to test spin fibers and clean ‘ugly duckling’ fibers to transform and/or share with the class are weclome (optional).
