Silk Worm to Silk Fabric with Cassie Dickson

In this class, students will learn to pull silk hankies and caps for knitting.  Project ideas will be provided.  Raising silk worms and processing your own silk will be covered.  Each student will receive a silk starter packet which will include hand-dyed silk hankies, caps, cocoons, and silk worm eggs. Intermediate knitting skills are required for projects.

All-Day Fair Isle Toddler Size Hat with Kathleen Taylor

Discover, or improve, your Fair Isle skills by knitting a toddler-size Nordic-Style Snowflake hat in this all-day workshop with author, knitter, and designer Kathleen Taylor. This workshop will cover chart-reading (including decreases worked from the chart) and yarn wrangling, as you work on a two-color hat (don’t let the pictures fool you- you’ll only be using one solid color yarn, and one self-striping yarn). Choose to work the folded hem with a Picot edging, or a smooth edge. Homework required! Minimum Age for Class: 12. Prerequisite Student Skills: No Fair Isle or stranded experience needed, but students must be comfortable with knitting in the round. Students need to bring tools/supplies? 100 gr solid color worsted weight wool yarn (170-220 yds, depending on maker), 100 gr self-striping worsted weight wool yarn whose colors do not match the color of the solid yarn (high contrast is desired). Knitting Mitered Square Cuffs with Kathleen Taylor

Learn to knit easy and beautiful mitered squares. In this class, students will learn the basics of mitered square knitting, and then make cuffs for mittens or socks, with self-striping, worsted weight yarns. Students will then have the option of using their cuffs to make mittens (regular, or fingerless) or socks. Instructions for knitting mitered squares, and patterns for both styles of mittens, and for socks with short-row heels, will be provided. Emphasis will be on learning mitered squares. Students may or may not progress far enough to begin working on the body of the sock or mitten. Little Tips and Knitting Tricks with Kathleen Taylor

Spend two hours with author and designer Kathleen Taylor, learning fun techniques that will make your knitting easier: a Substitute for the SSK that is faster and simpler, Knitting Back Backwards (for heels and bobbles), adding beads as you knit, using wire, fixing cable and Fair Isle mistakes, and other time-saving tips. Minimum Age for Class: 12. Prerequisite Student Skills: Should be able to knit and purl on straight needles. Students need to bring Worsted and fingering weight yarns (leftover balls are fine), appropriate straight needles for both yarn weights, scissors. Cast on 10 stitches and work a few rows of stockinette stitch in both yarn weights (this can be done during class).

EEK! A Steek! with Kathleen Taylor

Fear Not! You can cut your knitting without fear (or wine, though wine is nice). In this workshop, we will take a pre-knit tube and turn it into a doll sweater, learning techniques that can be used on any project that requires steeks. It’s fun! Really! And not scary at all! I promise. Students may choose to work with either worsted weight or fingering weight yarn. Note: The finished sweater will fit an approx.. 15” doll. Minimum Age for Class: 12 Prerequisite Student Skills: Students must be comfortable with knitting in the round, knitting and purling.   Students need to bring their pre-knit tube, plus additional yarns and needles, contrasting yarn, a large-eye needle, as listed. Students may choose to work their doll-size sweater in either worsted weight or fingering weight yarns. Students may knit a plain tube, or a tube with anyFair Isleor stranded pattern. All Day Nordic Christmas Stocking with Kathleen Taylor

In this all-day workshop, students will learn yarn wrangling techniques, chart reading, etc. Students will begin work on a 14” long, toe-up, stranded Christmas Stocking, with an afterthought heel. Students knit the toe in advance as homework (or they may use a provisional cast on, and knit the toe later), and as a class, we will knit past the waste-yarn heel in the first half of the class. In the second half, we will knit the afterthought heel, and then continue on with the cuff until the end of class. It is not likely that students will finish their stockings in class, but they should have the tools and information to finish on their own. I will provide detailed handouts, pattern, and charts.  Prerequisite Student Skills: Students must be comfortable knitting in the round. NoFair Isle or sock knitting experience needed. Students need to bring Size 8 dpns (or long circs if they’re Magic Loopers), and 2- 50gr balls of solid worsted weight yarn in highly contrasting colors, several yards of contrasting waste yarn, several sticky notes, 2 stitch markers, 1 safety pin

Homework:Pre-Knit Stocking Toe: With Size 8 needles and dark worsted weight yarn, CO 20 sts. Divide on needles as desired, without twisting the sts, join. Rnd 1: K; Rnd 2: (K 4, Inc 1), rep around. Illusion / Shadow Knitting with Nancie McCraw

Skip the spinning – knit a hat directly from hand dyed wool roving! Students will learn how to select appropriate fiber and prepare it for knitting, and cast on for this easy to knit hat. Knitting Cables with Jenny Raymond

Cables really are easy, they only look impressive. We will cover different ways designers write and chart their cables and how in the end it’s all doing the same thing – changing the order of stitches on the needle to create the crossover. We will be making cabled cup cozies with three different cable designs with the Debbie pattern, also covering cabling without a cable needle and how to count rows in cables.
