Weave a Potato Basket and Learn Appalachian Ribbed Basketry with Carla Filippelli (This is a two day series)
Participants will have the opportunity to learn the basics of Appalachian style ribbed basketry and will create a traditional potato basket during this workshop. In this two day workshop, you will fully gain the skills and technique and will be able to extrapolate on other sizes and styles. The Potato Basket makes a great yarn, fleece or supplies storage basket; ideal gift for our fiber friends too.
Instructor will provide a variety of beautiful hand dyed reeds, all tools, supplies and handouts needed for class.
Tricks of the basket weaving craft, safety tips, and discussion of the rich heritage of crafts in the region will all be topics for discussion and exploration. Students are encouraged to bring some wild vines to class to use as an interesting rim. Don’t forget your reading glasses!

Weave a Twined Gathering Basket with Carla Filippelli
Students will learn the twining method of weaving; beginning by creating an easy to master garlic storage basket with hand dyed reeds. You will have the opportunity to learn basketry techniques and gain the skills to try more ambitious gathering baskets in a variety shapes. Also included will be many helpful weaving tips and discussion about reed dyeing. Within a few hours, novices will be immersed into the world of creative basketry and may take home 2-3 baskets in this one day workshop. Create a handsome tool basket for your spinning wheel. It will hold your orifice hook, oil, and cards and hangs neatly on your wheel. Instructor supplies all tools, handouts and colorful reeds. Minimum Age for Class: age 12 and up
